Dogs at Shelters

Do you see a dog you like?
In addition to giving us a call,
Fill out our online adoption application and we'll be in touch with you soon.

There are many more dogs available than are profiled on this page.  As with all rescue groups, we constantly hear of other dogs in need of homes, and, while we try to update our web site regularly, getting photographs taken, film developed, and photos scanned for uploading onto the web site takes time. If you don't see the kind of dog you're looking for, please don't hesitate to call us. On a daily basis, we are in touch with shelters, pounds, humane societies, and other rescue organizations. While we will always recommend the hearty mutt, we will not hesitate to direct you toward a organization that works specifically with pure bred dogs, if that is your interest. Most pure breed organizations have members who are concerned with the rescue of that particular breed. If a mutt does not strike your fancy, we strongly encourage you to rescue, rather than buy outright, purebred dogs whenever possible. Our philosophy is: Don't Buy. Don't Breed. Rescue!!!

Important Note: While the dogs on this page need a home, they are relatively safe from the threat of euthanasia.  The dogs at the highest risk are the pound dogs on page 3. The pound doggies only have a short amount of time in which to be adopted, or they will be killed.  We ask that you consider the shelter dogs first.  Thanks.

Ruby is a 6 1/2 yr. red/chocolate liver (a very unusual color), spayed female Australian Cattle Dog.  NO CHILDREN and ONE PERSON DOG.

Her owner died and she was brought to rescue with another 15 yr. old ACD (being kept by the foster due to his age).  She was raised with him, and apparently went to the dog park as a puppy.  She seems to be threatened and afraid of other dogs, tho if they are not alpha or aggressive towards her, she seems to cope.  Ruby is a one person dog.

Ruby is housebroken, good with livestock, okay with cats, and not good with children.  She has had some extraordinary obedience training in her past and with a little tune-up she would be amazing in that regard.  She will do a 'down, stay' with her bowl of food in front of her until you release her to eat.

Ruby is also a fetching maniac, and will fetch until she drops.  She loves to go for car rides, and can be very protective of her vehicle.

She is, however, very fearful of new people while in her own surroundings.  She hasn't been out in public much to see if she would be less fearful in a place other than home.  Ruby must have been taken out in town when younger tho, as she will walk tandem with the older dog at a heel, on or off leash.  They came with a tandem leash, and the owner lived in downtown Petaluma on the Main blvd.  There was a 'Beware of dog' sign on the fence, so it is possible she wasn't socialized very much as she got older.

Ruby will have to have a special person to either accept her as she is, or to work her thru her fear issues.  She is amazing and her foster wouldn't part with her at all,  but Ruby is spending a lot of time sequestered in a kennel and this is no life for such a great girl...........it is with a lot of heartache she is being put up for adoption, but the hope is that she will be able to find a forever home that can enjoy her wonderful loving personality, her antics, her amazing capabilities and give her what she must have had before her only person in life passed away from cancer and left her to fend for herself in this big, foreign, and very scary world.

Ruby is currently being fostered in Santa Rosa, Ca.

Carson (left) and Cassie (right)

Carson is a wiggly-waggly happy 8mos. to 1yr. Basset Hound/Herding Breed cross.  He is approx. 35 lbs. of puppy love and playtime.

Carson's basic obedience skills consist of sit.  He is almost crate-trained and housebroken.  Carson seems to have a fairly good recall (obviously from his herding breed genes).

He looks up into your eyes and when you look into his, you will agree; that is everything.

Carson loves to romp and play with everyone who comes across his path-dogs, cats and people alike.  He is also pretty darn athletic considering his being built close to the ground.  Being a youngster, Carson will need a person or family willing to provide him with a good foundation from here on out.  Our guess is that he was on the right path when we got him, as he seems to have no glaring issues that we can see and he has the most wonderful sleek and shiny coat imaginable.

He will make a wonderful addition to whomever adopts him.  Even tho Carson is short of stature, he is huge in heart.

Carson is currently being fostered in Santa Rosa, Ca.

Travis is a red speckle cattle dog with a smooth coat & docked tail.  He has a large black patch and double mask with the familiar cattle dog Bently mark otherwise known as the McNiven mark.  He is appears to be 7-8 yrs. old, was already neutered when found, and weighs in at 37 lbs.

Travis, who traveled from Salinas is the newest N.B.C.R. & P. dog.  He hasn't been out of the shelter too long, but so far is an absolute sweetheart!!!  Travis was found as a stray and has an old front leg or elbow injury which will be seen & diagnosed soon at the vet.

This dog is very attentive, affectionate, wanting to please, alert, seems house broken and gets right into the car, though so far is a bit nervous on the ride.  He is very good on and off leash, is curious yet ignores livestock and so far has absolutely no interest in cats.  He is very playful with other dogs and passed his temperament test at the shelter.  He appears to have low to moderate energy, (except when playing), knows to sit, is very people social which is a very good thing in this breed.

Someone will be very lucky to have the opportunity to add him to their family. Travis will look directly into your eyes, crawl up under your arm and into your lap for hugs and give soft licks.

Travis is currently being fostered in Santa Rosa, Ca.

More Dang Dogs on Page Two

Page two contains photos and bios of dogs available through our 3rd party/assisted adoption program. This is a service that NBCR&P offers to dogs other than those in our care who are in need of homes. While we generally do not take in dogs surrendered by private parties, we do what we can to assist in the placement of these animals. We do, however, strongly encourage people to explore every possible alternative to surrendering their pets. (See our Last Resort section.)

For more information about our assisted private adoption guidelines, please proceed to page two.

There are many more dogs available.
Please call us and we will gladly discuss your adoption options
and help you decide which dog, if any, is best for your lifestyle.
